Etymology

Probably through modern German Harfe, from Old High German harfa, from Proto-Germanic *harpǭ. The expected form is *Haarf; the actual form could perhaps be native (with an exceptional development as in werfen), but with regard to the non-everyday character of the word borrowing from German seems much more likely. Cognate with Dutch harp, English harp.
