From Old Norse hlér (the sea), Hlér (proper name, an alternate name of Ægir and namesake of the island Hlésey according to the Prose Edda), from Proto-Norse *ᚺᛚᛖᚹᚨᛉ (*Hlēwaʀ), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱley- (to shelter, cover). Taken up as a given name in the 20th century.
