From Middle High German lerche, larche, from Old High German lerihha, larihha, an early borrowing from Latin larix, from Ancient Greek λάριξ (lárix), itself borrowed from Gaulish, from Proto-Celtic *daru, from Proto-Indo-European *dóru. Cognate with German Lärche, Cimbrian lèrch, and, distantly, English tree.
