Noun

Lords

  1. plural of Lord

Proper noun

Lords

  1. (British, UK politics, plural only) the House of Lords

Usage notes

Although plural in form, the term takes singular verb forms: “The Lords has made its decision.” When used by itself, the word is accompanied by the definite article: “The LCC scheme for expanding and linking up tramways across Central London was rejected by the Lords.” But when used attributively, the definite article is omitted: “The sons of peers can be members of the House of Commons till they succeed to their seat in Lords.”
