Aspiration

[edit]

@Vis M, should aspiration be made optional? like even Malayalam teachers dont pronounce them properly in Standard Malayalam or while reading (not everyone though), if its a medial voiceless, its even voiced as in പാഡം or മുഗം/മൊഗം; so displaying <ഭയങ്കരം, പാഠം> as /b(ʱ)ɐjɐŋɡɐɾɐm/; /paː.ʈʰɐm/, /paː.ɖɐm/, /paː.ɖʱɐm/? Ive heard people pronouncing <കഥ, മേഘം> as /kɐd̪ʱɐ, meːkʰɐm/ too. AleksiB 1945 (talk) 10:50, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

No, those are not proper pronunciations. We should actually consult a Malayalam linguistic group before making big decisions that deviate from standard practices.
Here is a useful video on pronunciation of Malayalam letters: https://youtu.be/MH_FQhJq2Hg?t=15m55s
https://phon.smc.org.in/ uses proper IPA transcription of Malayalam. It's by user:Santhosh.thottingal, WMF staff and Malayalam language expert who also leads Malayalam open source (SMC) community Vis M (talk) 16:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
yes but when even some Malayalam teachers dont pronounce them properly then why make the distinction? public speakers often pronounce them properly but even then ivent heard anyone pronouncing intervocalic or post nasal voiceless aspirates properly, "ഗ്രന്ഥം" is always [ɡɾɐn̪d̪ɐm] or [ɡɾɐn̪d̪ʱɐm] and never [ɡɾɐn̪t̪ʰɐm] AleksiB 1945 (talk) 13:57, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
