Etymology

[edit]

From Navajo naaltsoos (book) + áyiilaa (he made it). The name is due to a misunderstanding where the Navajo phrase for "a book written by" was interpreted as an author’s name.[1] The books’ covers bear the words Brian Wildsmith Naaltsoos Áyiilaa, meaning "a book by Brian Wildsmith."

Proper noun

[edit]

Naaltsoos Ayiilaa

  1. A person’s name.

Usage notes

[edit]

This name is a nonexistent person, presumably Navajo, listed in several book catalogs as the co-author for the Navajo editions of children’s books by Brian Wildsmith.[2][3][4]
