Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *mr̥gʷ-tó-s, from *mergʷ- (dark, coloured) +‎ *-tós. Cognate with Ancient Greek ᾰ̓μορβός (amorbós, dark), Old Norse myrkr (dark), Lithuanian márgas (variegated, colorful).
