Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *dʰayl- (“part, watershed”). The Indo-European root is also the source of Proto-Baltic *daili- (Lithuanian dailiti (“divide”)), Proto-Slavic *dělъ (Old Church Slavonic дѣлити (děliti), Russian дели́ть (delítʹ)). Cognate with *dailą, *dailǭ.
