From Proto-Indo-European *dʰayl- (part, watershed). The Indo-European root is also the source of Proto-Baltic *daili- (Lithuanian dailiti (divide)), Proto-Slavic *dělъ (Old Church Slavonic дѣлити (děliti), Russian дели́ть (delítʹ)). Cognate with *dailą, *dailǭ.
