Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-.[1] Cognate with Thracian *zelmis, Lithuanian želmuõ, želmeñs (plant, sprout), and Latvian zel̂me (vigorous, opulent growth).[2] Compare with the Latvian hydronym Zelmin and the Lithuanian toponyms Želmenų káimas, Želmeniškių káimas, and Žalmiškių káimas.
