Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic *хоху́лꙗ (*xoxúlja), from Proto-Slavic *xoxùľa, possibly from *xaxuliti (disappear, hide), from *xuliti, from *xula.[1][2] Cognate with dialectal Russian хоху́ля (xoxúlja), хаху́ля (xaxúlja), and also Russian вы́хухоль (výxuxolʹ), which is from Middle Russian вы́хухоль (výxuxolʹ), вы́хохоль (výxoxolʹ), attested in the 17th century.
