Etymology

From Proto-Northwest Caucasian *pərə.

Reconstruction notes

In this root of the Abkhaz, there is a fluctuation of valencies: а́-ԥыр-ра (D́-R-D) ~ а-ԥыр-ра́ (D-D-D́), but а-ԥры-ра́, а-ԥр-ра́ (D-D-D́). Due to the insufficient material in the Abaza, it is difficult to clarify the valence, and therefore the place of accent. Chirikba reconstructs the final accent *pərə́. Thus, this form can be in 4 types:

• *pərə́ (D.D́)
• *pərə́ (R.Ŕ)
• *pərə́ (R.D́)
• *pə́rə (D́.R)

Outside of this family, there is Ubykh form 1p. sǝ-pǝ́rǝ-n (“I'm flying”), which, apparently, indicates the dominant valence of the first syllable of root (D-D́.R-R^?).
