Potentially from Proto-Atlantic-Congo *-bhúa- (dog). Cognates outside Bantu are Efik ebua (dog), Ibibio ewua (dog), Tiv iwa (dog), Uhami àbùà (dog), Bamum mvuo (dog) and Yemba bu (dog) (from Proto-Grassfields *búà) and Proto-Edoid *A-bhωa, also see Proto-Yoruboid *á-byá
