From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰley-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰel- (to shine). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *gliwēną (to shine, glitter)[1] (compare Old Norse gljá), Proto-Germanic *glīmaną (to shine) (compare English gleam), Ancient Greek χλιαίνω (khliaínō, warm).
