Uncertain; possibly reconstructible as *ɸletrom, liquid metathesized from earlier *ɸeltrom, from Proto-Indo-European *pél-tro-m, from *pel- (to envelope, wrap around) +‎ *-trom, compare Latin pellis (pelt, hide), Proto-Germanic *fellą (skin, hide).[1]
