[edit]From pre-Germanic *sth₂-mn-ís, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂mn̥ (“that which stands”) (compare *stōmô (“stature”)), deverbal noun from the root *steh₂- (“to stand, stay”) (whence *stāną).
