[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From an adjective derivative of Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₁ter- (fire), with the colour sense arising from the colour of the soot made by a fire. De Vaan finds such a semantic shift hard to believe, but he cannot find any alternative etymologies.[1]

Adjective

[edit]

*ātros

  1. black

Declension

[edit]

Descendants

[edit]
  • Latin: āter
  • Umbrian: 𐌀𐌕𐌓𐌖 (atru), atro (acc. pl. n.), adrir, adrer (abl. pl. n.)
