Proto-Italic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₃erbʰ- (to turn). Two derivational pathways are equally possible, requiring different reconstructions of the Proto-Italic word:[1]

  • *orβetā would require a derivation from the past participle of an iterative verb *orbeō.
  • *orβitā would require a feminine substantivization in *-ā of a *-t-extension of the i-stem *orβis that appears in Latin orbis (circle).

The reconstruction *orβetā is selected arbitrarily, with no opinion on the likeliness of *orβetā over *orβitā.
