[edit]Univerbation of *dȅvę + *sìlъ, literally “nine powers”, three times three powers, for its medicinal potency. Compare German Neunkraft, Neunkraut and continuation of such formations in Russian девяти́льник (devjatílʹnik), Slovene devẹ̑tək (tonal orthography).
