Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skord-, from Proto-Indo-European *skordʰ-eh₂. Cognate with Latvian skā̀rdît (“to pound, crush”), Lithuanian skardýti (“to dig up, crush”), Old Prussian scurdis (“dibstone, mattock”).
