Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *walˀtiš, cognate with Lithuanian váltis (“oat ear”), Old Prussian wolti (“ear of corn”). Possibly further akin to Proto-Germanic *walþuz (“forest”), Old Irish folt (“hair”).
