Proto-Uralic[edit]

Reconstruction[edit]

UEW gives the reconstruction *śojwa, but this does not match any of the descendants. Contrast *ojwa (head).

The cluster *jw is reconstructed on the basis of Sami, but also *wj is possible, as metathesis *vj > *jv is regular in Kola Sami (compare Proto-Samic *čoavjē). This may suggest that the word is originally a derivative: *śawe +‎ *-ja.

Noun[edit]

*śajwa

  1. clay
