Within the disputed Indo-Uralic theory, it has been connected with the Indo-European noun *h₁nómn̥.

Similar words meaning "name" can be found in other languages of northern Eurasia, for instance Proto-Yukaghir *ńu:, Proto-Chukotko-Kamchatkan *nənnə, and Proto-Japonic *na.
