Alternatively reconstructed as *ukti, *ukte and *ukta. The term is the most likely origin for a large set of toponyms in and around waterways in Finland, Estonia, and Northern Russia. Rahkonen suggests descent through a Uralic substrate language once spoken around the Upper Volga region.[1][2]
