Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Germanic *hlunniz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱl̥nów-is ~ *ḱln̥w-éy-s, from *ḱl̥néwti (to be listening), related to *hleuþr (noise), *hlūd (loud).
