From *hur(ʀ)n- (hornet) +‎ *-ut (animal suffix) +‎ *-u, from Proto-Germanic *hurzô ~ *hurzniz (hornet), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱérh₂s-ō ~ *ḱr̥h₂s-nés (hornet), from *ḱerh₂- (head, horn) +‎ *-s- +‎ *-ō. Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *śirˀšō (hornet), Latin crābrō (hornet).
