Etymology[edit]

Likely inherited from Proto-Germanic *snigilaz, whence Old Norse snigill (“snail”), but readjusted through *snagōn (“to crawl, creep”) +‎ *-il (agent suffix), whence also *snaggjō (“snail”).[1][2][3][4]
