[edit]@Sławobóg: What do you mean with this "loss of initial *w" being unexplained? *w is regularly lost before resonants in Balto-Slavic:
- Proto-Indo-European *wreh₁ǵ- > Proto-Balto-Slavic *rḗˀźtei
- Proto-Indo-European *wrenk- > Proto-Balto-Slavic *ránkāˀ
- Proto-Indo-European *wreyt- > Proto-Balto-Slavic *réistei
