Actually, in the publication, where Jorma Koivulehto gives this etymology, he specifically states "(lowland, flatland) ground. "... Baltic *šāma-, via Pre-Proto-Finnic *šämä from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źemē (“ground”),..."

As arriving from, say Lithuanian coast by sea to Finland Proper (Varsinais-Suomi) only an idiot or a blind man would describe the area as "flatlands", Koivulehtos' etymology is unrealistic, to be pollite. JouHey (talk) 06:52, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
