Etym 1

[edit]

Could Etym_1 ("easy") be derived from Etym_2 ("empty"), esp in the sense of "easy to occupy" or "devoid of difficulty"? Leasnam (talk) 00:02, 30 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

It does seem like they could be related. But I think at least the second definition ought to be an u-, i- or ja-stem, because of Gothic which has -ja- in the inflection of the attested forms. The Gothic word isn't actually attested in the nominative, and that's the only form in all Germanic descendants that still distinguishes between u-, i- and ja-stems (-us, -s and -jis/-eis in Gothic). So without that, we can't really be sure what the original Germanic nominative was unless there is more information. —CodeCat 10:35, 30 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
