Kroonen connects this verb with *berganą (“to keep safe”), from which he derives "to hide" for this verb specifically. Rather, if this verb originally meant "to keep safe, preserve" as well, both "to hide" and "to bury" seem reasonable developments, and also allows the connection of the Gothic verb *𐌱𐌹𐌱𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (*bibaurgjan), as implied by 𐌱𐌹𐌱𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌲𐌴𐌹𐌽𐍃 (bibaurgeins, “boundary of a camp”), literally "around the setting of camp", the meaning originally being "to keep safe" then > "to set camp".
