Etymology[edit]

There seems to be a tendency for strong verb class 4 derived nouns to have zero-grade and root stress, at least in the strong cases. So I think it's very likely that this is derived from *dwelaną, though it probably became disassociated from the verb at an earlier time, considering the semantic differences.
