Alternative etymology

[edit]

Apparently the usual PIE root given contains a laryngeal *gʰHbʰ-, which makes it unlikely that *gebaną is derived from it; it could only give Germanic **gab-, **gēb-, or **gōb-, I think. Unless maybe this is an example of the vowel changing place, *gʰHebʰ-? Is that Schwebeablaut?

Kroonen favors the etymology put forward by Kortlandt, that this verb is a remodeling of *ga-ef-, from PIE *ko(m)h₁ep-, whence also Latin coepī (< *ko(m)h₁eh₁p-). Anglom (talk) 23:56, 25 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
