User:Burgundaz concurs with the derivation from *marzijaną, but reconstructs *Marzaz or *Marzijaz, preferring the latter. A derivation within Germanic is likely to retain the *-z-, while borrowing into Latin is more likely to result in distortions, such as *-z- > *-s-.

Finally, what was the phonological value of -s- in this position in Latin? Was it voiced?
