*tehundōną – is it of PGmc age?

[edit]

Is this lemma of Proto-Germanic age? Significantly, tithing is closely associated with Christianity, so I suggest the word was a parallel formation in the daughters, perhaps spread by Anglo-Saxon missionaries.

There is no verb 'to tithe' attested in Gothic. In the one reference to tithing in Gothic 'I give tithes' is 'afdailja taihundon dail (f.)' equivalent to PGmc '*(aba)dailijō tehundô dailą'. Notably the Greek original has a single verb 'ἀποδεκατῶ', 'I tithe'; arguably, if Gothic had such a verb, it would have been used here.
