Reconstruction talk:Proto-Nakh/joq̇
*joq̇ or *jobq̇?
[edit]Nikolaev, Starostin (1994), and Schrijver (2021) reconstruct the *jobq̇ (*jobqʾ) based on Bats and Chechen data. They believe that the Bats -ṗ- (-pʾ-) originated from *-b- under the influence of *-q̇- (*-qʾ-), and the Chechen -u- from *-ou- < *-ob-. All this is true, but it does not take into account that in Ingush *-ob- > *-ou- also gives -u- as in Chechen. Although -u- should be long, some sources such as Imnaishvili (1977) or Arsakhanov (1959) show -uu-, but usually the Chechen form has a short -u-, most likely because of the closed syllable.
However, the Ingush form does not demonstrate this, if it contained *-b-, then the same thing would be expected as in the Chechen form. Whereas an oblique stem shows that the Bats, Chechen and Ingush forms contained *-b-:
- Oblique stem:
- Bats: *abq̇-ar- > aṗq̇-ar-
- Chechen: *abq̇-ar- > *auq̇-ar- > ouq̇-ar-
- Ingush: *abq̇-ar- > *auq̇-ar- > ouq̇-ar-
- Direct case:
- Bats: *joq̇ (<~ *abq̇-ar-) > *jobq̇ > joṗq̇
- Chechen: *joq̇ (<~ *abq̇-ar-) > *jobq̇ > *jouq̇> juuq̇ > juq̇
- Ingush: *joq̇ > joq̇
