Plausibility of Turkic borrowing

[edit]

@Fay Freak:, according to Горох.ua, the origin of Ukrainian бусол (busol) is not certain enough and neither is its relation to *botьjanъ, so I feel reluctant to mention a borrowing from Turk. *boŕ for the proto-Slavic form. In principle, I don't see how Early Slavs would have borrowed it from Turkic şaz-dialects or why they would have chosen the word for "gray" to describe it. If you wish, though, feel free to mention it.

PS The parallel with Old East Slavic лиликъ (lilikŭ) is indeed somewhat compelling, but not quite sufficient to conclude that all Slavic words for 'stork' need to be borrowings. The primary word for stork in OCS was Old Church Slavonic стрькъ (strĭkŭ), which looks as a quite old Germanic borrowing (if not native) => early Slavs definitely had knowledge of the bird.
