Is Polish "gawiedź" (mob / crowd of onlookers - esp. chaotic, rude etc.) related? Often used in "ku uciesze gawiedzi" - for the satisfaction of the simple crowd (eg. Public punishments, spectacles).

Semantically, the word for cattle "bydło" is nowadays colloquially used in Polish for a chaotic grouping of people or boisterous mass behaviours esp. with rudeness and raucous. "Robić bydło" - be boisterous (as a group / crowd). Easy to imagine how an old Slavic word for cattle also gained that semantic currency in modern Polish.
