Inherited from Proto-Germanic *Sigimēraz, equivalent to siġe (victory) +‎ mǣre (famous, renowned, illustrious). Cognate with Proto-Norse ᛋᛁᚷᛁᛗᛡᚱᛡᛉ (sigimᴀrᴀʀ /⁠Sigimāraʀ⁠/) (whence Old Norse Sigmarr).
