Saterland Frisian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Swien (“pig”) + -e- + Flaask (“meat”). Compare German Schweinefleisch and English swineflesh.
The reduction -ie- > -i- is irregular. Fort (2015) explains this as being a result of the stress, which originally may have lain on the third syllable.
Pronunciation
