Disputable etymology: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/chiaus "first known use 1595" contrary: Greek τζαούσιος (tzaousious) "was in use by the Byzantines perhaps as early as the late 11th century" As far as I know from other history sources first Turkish mercenaries in Byzantine armies appeared much latter, and this Greek "tzaousious" was earlier used in Morea, and latter in Macedonia and Thrace.
