Guest Post: A Smattering of Obnoxious Word Origins gives an alternative etymology from Coptic: "the three words fa-la-fel mean “of many beans.”" I couldn't find it in:

  • Behnstedt, Peter (1981). "Weitere koptische Lehnwörter im Ägyptisch-Arabischen". Die Welt Des Orients (in German). 12: 81–98. ISSN 0043-2547 doesn't list it as far as I have seen.
  • Federico Corriente: Coptic Loanwords of Egyptian Arabic in Comparison with the Parallel Case of Romance Loanwords in Andalusi Arabic, with the True Egyptian Etymon of Al-Andalus, Gorgias Press, 2013

Right now, I couldn't check Bishai, Wilson B. 1964. “Coptic lexical influence on Egyptian Arabic”. Journal of the Near Eastern Society 23. 39–47.
