Could it possibly be related to the name of the ancient Hebrew harp כינור? 173.88.246.138 23:28, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- This seems to be the wrong entry for the musical instrument, which may explain the absence of the sense. The right entry seems to be किंनरा (kiṃnarā) (M-W writes (ā)). Although maybe they are alt forms of each other; not sure, someone else should check.
- As for the actual point: It's very plausible. Monier-Williams makes this connection, see this page, where he compares Ancient Greek κινύρα (kinúra). Our own Syriac entry ܟܢܪܐ also makes this connection, implying a path of Proto-Semitic *kinnār- => Classical Syriac ܟܢܪܐ (kennārā) => Sanskrit किंनरा (kiṃnarā). 98.170.164.88 03:21, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
- OTOH, Asko Parpola ([1]) argues that the borrowing is in the opposite direction, and that the word is composed of Dravidian roots *kil and *naram. Compare, respectively, [2] and [3] (which we have under *ñarampu). 98.170.164.88 04:00, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
