- It looks like rather than the Malayalam word being spelt so, the Westerners used the spelling fanam incidentally. The cognates also uses letter /pa/ (in Tamil and Telugu). From w:Travancore Fanam: "
The word Fanam appears to be an Anglo-Germanic sound shift from the word Panam, which means money in Dravidian languages
