It looks like rather than the Malayalam word being spelt so, the Westerners used the spelling fanam incidentally. The cognates also uses letter /pa/ (in Tamil and Telugu). its the anglicized spelling like kochi-cochin, kozhikode-calicut, kollam-quilon even in Danish fano and French fanon, it was used in Madras too AleksiB 1945 (talk) 14:51, 7 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
