Regarding the transliteration[edit]

Some transcriptions of the By runestone have þat aʀina (spaces not present in original). I have chosen the alternative reading þan aʀina for the following reasons:

  1. Epigraphic: Upon inspecting the relevant photographs, it becomes clear that the rune following þa is not a regular t-rune: its form is ᛄ, which does not resemble the ᛏ t in orte. The rune closest of shape in the Elder Futhark ᚾ n.
  2. Linguistic: þat is in all Germanic languages the neuter pronoun, but arinn, the Old Norse descendant of aʀinaʀ, is a masculine noun. If the inscription truly reads þat, we must assume an irregular change in the noun gender from a Proto-Norse neuter to an Old Norse masculine.
