Sap Saam dim

[edit]

I am an English woman who has been married to a Chinese man for over 30 years. It has recently come to light that my brother in law has, unbeknown to me, been referring to me as sap saam dim for as long as I’ve been married to his brother. When we confronted him about the meaning of it he claims not to have known that it infers to someone who is stupid, dimwit, not all there etc, and thought it sounded ‘cute’. We don’t have that good a relationship and I’m convinced he used it as a derogatory term for me. Is it possible that this phrase has varied meanings and can it ever be used complimentary?
