Among the alternate spellings for this term are:
It actually referred to a different huqin from the jinghu: namely, the short-necked fiddle that is used as the leading instrument in Hakka string ensembles, which resembles a tiny version of the touxian used in Teochew music. The "real"/original diaoguizai's neck and resonator are made from tropical hardwood, painted black, the resonator having a slightly rounded shape, whereas the jinghu's neck and resonator are made from bamboo. As the jinghu became more widely known and adopted by Hakka musicians, the usage of the term shifted from referring to the older/indigenous huqin to the (imported) jinghu.
