Spellings, related terms, alternative forms
[edit]The JA WP article at ja:w:天邪鬼 lists 河伯 and 海若 as alternative forms, but I cannot find any clear evidence of this.
That article also describes the 海若 spelling as the name of a Chinese water devil, and a possible source for the ama no jaku reading. I also cannot find any evidence for this. The Chinese term, as best I can tell, refers to a sea god -- which holds true even for monolingual JA dictionaries, with no mention of devils or demons. And no other JA source I've consulted lists this as a source for ama no jaku.
