Guoyu quote[edit]

@Erminwin 鮮卑 in the Guoyu quote you've added is possibly a scribal error of 鮮牟. Some manuscripts have 鮮牟 (e.g. 1,2, 3, 4, 5, but see 6), and so does 國語集解 published by Zhonghua Book Company in 2002 (see p. 430), with the commentary 黃丕烈曰:「鮮牟,一本作『鮮卑』,非。」『鮮牟』即九年之『根牟』也,今琅邪陽都縣東有牟鄉。」RcAlex36 (talk) 03:42, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@RcAlex36: Thanks for the research! I'll remove the Guoyu' quote just for safety's sake. I think it makes sense that 鮮卑 results from a scribal error for 鮮卑, which is turn results from a scribal error for 根牟; according to Du Yu, the Genmou were Eastern Yi [1], so they lived near the Chu (and both peoples lived to the east & south of the Sinitic-speaking Zhou et al.) and were more likely to be the people whom Guoyu mentioned alongside the Chu. EDIT: Will also edit the wikipedia Xianbei article. Erminwin (talk) 15:39, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Erminwin: Not sure if 根牟 is a scribal error for 鮮牟 as 根 and 鮮 do not look similar. RcAlex36 (talk) 15:47, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RcAlex36 Indeed, I drew that conclusion based on the comment:「『鮮牟』宣九年之『根牟』也」/ "The Xianmou are the Genmou in '(Zuo Zhuan's chapter) Xuan's 9th year'". A safer conclusion should be: 鮮牟 and 根牟 were Old Chinese transcriptions of the endonyms of an Eastern Yi sub-group. Erminwin (talk) 16:07, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
