Refining the etymology

[edit]

Hi @Bezimenen, I was wondering if you could help me ensure that the etymology of this suffix is well-written. The suffix has been discussed in several Bulgarian historical grammars, as well as issues of IBL's "Български език", so I know it's attested in the literature. What I want to confirm is the etymology.

Per our current Proto-Slavic reconstruction, *-tьba is a variant of *-tva (and redirects to it). Per Mladenov, -итба (-itba) proper is from *-iti +‎ *-ьba. As far as I can tell, these might be equivalent statements, but I'm not 100% sure, so I thought I could use your help.

I'm also planning on creating -тва (-tva), so it would be useful to understand (and appropriately express) the relationship between that, -итба (-itba) and -ба (-ba). All I can say at present is that they are related terms, but I'm not sure whether there are any derived-from relationships between them.

Thanks,
