the aintree iron is the green piece of grass shaped like an old flat smoothing iron the stump of the aintree cross an old sandstone village cross is in the middle of the wide end. That looked like the handle. this saying goes back to before the 2nd world war82.1.47.35 09:29, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
